Appliances
⚠️ Notice: The center burner is currently out of service — please do not use it. All other burners are working normally.

The kitchen has a Gasland Chef 5-zone induction cooktop built into the island. It only works with magnetic cookware — use the pots and pans provided in the cabinet below.

1
Touch the main Power button to wake up the cooktop.
2
Place a compatible pot or pan on the zone you want to use.
3
Touch the power icon for that zone to activate it.
4
Use the + and touch buttons (or slide your finger on the slider bar) to set heat level 1–9. Level 1 = simmer, 9 = high boil.
5
When finished, touch and hold the zone's button for a few seconds to turn off that zone. Press the main Power button to lock the surface and turn off all zones.
⚠️ The glass surface stays cool, but cookware gets very hot — use the pot holders provided. If the display shows "E" or an error, the pan may not be induction-compatible; try a different pot or pan.
💡 The Boost function (if available on your zone) heats water very fast — great for boiling pasta. Tap Boost, then dial back to a lower setting once boiling.

To Bake:

1
Press the BAKE button on the touch panel.
2
Use the number pad or +/− arrows to enter your temperature (e.g., 350°F).
3
Press START. The oven will beep and display "PrE" while preheating.
4
When preheating is complete, the oven will beep again — place your food inside.
5
Press CANCEL/OFF when done cooking. Leave the door slightly ajar to cool.

To Broil:

1
Press BROIL, then select HI or LO using the +/− buttons.
2
Press START. Leave the oven door open a crack while broiling.
💡 Oven mitts are in the drawer to the left of the oven. Rack positions: middle for most baking, top rack for broiling.

K-Cup pods and mugs are provided as part of your continental breakfast — check the cupboard above the Keurig.

1
Check the water reservoir on the side — fill at the sink if it's below the MIN line.
2
Press the power button and wait for the "Ready to Brew" indicator to light up (~1 minute).
3
Lift the handle on top, drop in a K-Cup pod (foil side up), and close the handle firmly.
4
Place your mug on the drip tray, then select your brew size (6, 8, 10, or 12 oz).
5
Press the brew button. Your coffee will be ready in about 1 minute.
💡 For a stronger cup, choose the smaller size (6 oz). Used K-Cups go in the trash — lift the handle, remove the pod, and discard.

A 4-slice toaster is on the kitchen island. Place bread in the slots, adjust the browning dial, and press the lever down. The toast will automatically pop up when done.

⚠️ Please empty the crumb tray after use — it slides out from the bottom.

The LG French door refrigerator has an ice and water dispenser on the left door. To use:

  • Select cubed or crushed ice using the button on the dispenser panel
  • Hold your glass or cup against the ice dispenser paddle to dispense ice
  • For water, move the glass up to the water dispenser paddle and press — do not use the ice dispenser area for water
  • The freezer is the bottom drawer — pull to open

Please keep breakfast items on your shelf (right side). Do not remove items that belong to the hosts.

The Instant Pot Ultra is a multi-cooker that can pressure cook, slow cook, sauté, steam, and more. It has an LCD display that shows the current status.

Common LCD display messages:

  • OFF — Standby mode, ready to use
  • On — Pressure cooking / preheating in progress
  • Lid — Check that the lid is properly sealed
  • Hot — Sauté temperature has been reached
  • 00:20 — Countdown timer showing time remaining

Basic Pressure Cook:

1
Add ingredients and at least 1 cup of liquid to the inner pot.
2
Lock the lid — align the arrow on the lid with the "close" icon and twist to lock.
3
Turn the steam release valve to Sealing.
4
Press the dial to select Pressure Cook, set your time, then press Start.
5
When done, carefully turn the valve to Venting to release steam, or let it release naturally.
⚠️ Never open the lid while the float valve (small silver pin on the lid) is raised — steam is still pressurized. Wait until it drops before opening.
💡 For slow cooking, select Slow Cook and set to Low or High — no need to seal the lid tightly, just place it on top.
1
Load dishes — plates in the lower rack, glasses and cups in the upper rack. Silverware in the basket.
2
Open the detergent dispenser on the inside of the door and add a detergent pod or powder (found under the sink).
3
Close and latch the door firmly, then select a cycle (Normal is fine for most loads).
4
Press Start. The dishwasher will run for about 1–2 hours.
💡 Please run the dishwasher if you've used dishes during your stay — it really helps us with turnaround!

The TV remote is on the end table near the sofa. Press the power button to turn on. The TV is connected to the internet — you can log into your own Netflix, Hulu, or other streaming accounts. Please log out before you leave.

💡 WiFi password is shown on the Welcome tab so you can log in to your streaming services.
🎲 A selection of board games is also available in the living area — feel free to use them!

The thermostat is located on the wall in the hallway near the common bathroom. It controls both the guest and host areas, so please contact Martin if you'd like the temperature adjusted — he can do it remotely!

⚠️ Please do not adjust the thermostat directly. Text Martin at (907) 360-3950 and he'll take care of it right away.

The washer and dryer are located in the host's space downstairs. They are available to guests by arrangement — just text Marty to coordinate a convenient time.

Laundry detergent is provided. Please move your laundry promptly when the cycle is done.

Where to Find Things

Fresh towels are in both bathrooms — large bath towels on the rack and hand towels on the counter. Extra towels are in the hall closet if you need more.

Extra blankets and pillows are in the hall closet. The room-darkening shades in both bedrooms are great for Alaska's long summer days — pull them fully down for a dark room.

Shampoo, conditioner, and body wash are provided in each bathroom. You'll also find hand soap, tissues, and a hair dryer. If you need anything else, just ask!

Free parking is available in the driveway. Please park in front of the far right garage door — the side closest to the exterior stairs leading up to your entrance.

Trash can is in the kitchen (stainless steel can near the island). The large brown bins outside are for trash — feel free to use them for bag drop.

  • Pots & pans — lower cabinet, left of island
  • Plates, bowls, glasses — upper cabinets above counter
  • Silverware — top drawer, right of sink
  • Cooking utensils — crock on the island counter
  • Foil, bags, wrap — upper shelf in kitchen alcove
  • Paper towels — under the sink

The master ensuite has a large tiled walk-in shower with multiple jets. Turn the handle to the left for hot water. Allow 30–60 seconds for hot water to arrive.

The hall bathroom has a full bathtub/shower combo. Turn the faucet on and pull up the diverter knob on the faucet spout to switch to the showerhead.

The living room sofa folds out to a bed for additional guests (max 4 guests total). Pull the handle under the front cushions and unfold. Extra linens for the sofa bed are in the hall closet.

Before You Head Out
🌤️ Weather & What to Wear

Typical summer temperatures range from the low 50s to the low 70s°F. Conditions can change quickly — dress in layers:

Inner layerMoisture-wicking long underwear or base layer
Insulating layerFleece jacket or sweater — synthetic performs better than cotton
Outer layerWaterproof (not just water-resistant) shell — Gore-Tex or equivalent. This one matters!
TipZip-off nylon pants are great — shorts on warm stretches, full pants when it cools
⚠️ Alaska Safety Tips
🐻 BearsMake noise on the trail — especially around blind corners. Do not run if you encounter one; stay calm and slowly back away while facing the bear. We have loaner bear spray available — just ask!
🦌 MooseMoose injure more people than bears. Give them a very wide berth, especially cows with calves — never place yourself between a mother and her calf.
🌊 Glacial SiltDo not walk out onto glacial silt (the gray sandy/muddy flats visible at low tide near Turnagain Arm). It acts like quicksand — legs sink in quickly and it is extremely difficult to get free. The incoming tide makes this life-threatening. Stay on solid ground.

Alaska's backcountry is best seen from the air. Take a floatplane from Lake Hood — right next door! — for glacier tours, wildlife viewing, or landings on remote lakes. K2 Aviation, Rust's Flying Service, and others offer tours from $200–$500/person.
🎣
